Program Overview

Ivy Creek School is a separate day school program which serves students with special learning needs who have been identified as emotionally disturbed. Typically, students who attend Ivy Creek have manifested behavior that could not be effectively managed in a less restrictive school environment. The school is operated as a subsidiary of the Piedmont Regional Educational Program (PREP) and provides educational services to students from the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson as well as the city of Charlottesville. Ivy Creek is a regional public school program funded by the local school systems.

The school serves kindergarten through high school students with a maximum enrollment of 72. The school is located on land adjacent to the Albemarle High School/Jack Jouett Middle School complex.

Students who attend Ivy Creek are grouped developmentally with students of a similar age into one of nine classrooms. Each class contains a maximum of eight students and is staffed by a team made of a teacher and up to two teacher assistants. Together, these staff members implement the student’s individual education program (IEP); and plan relevant and motivating educational programs designed to improve the student’s academic, social, and behavioral functioning. In addition, four clinicians provide counseling services to students in group and/or individual settings. These services, also a part of the students’ IEP, are designed to provide the individual student with support, insight and feedback and assists the classroom teams in understanding the students’ needs and formulating appropriate intervention strategies and techniques.

The overall operation of the school is the responsibility of the school principal who works under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Piedmont Regional Educational (PREP). The PREP Joint Board of Control, made up of members of each division’s school board, sets the direction and policies under which the school operated.

Goals

Recognizing that our first, and most important, responsibility is to our student and their families, we are pledged to:

  • Provide a program of highest quality one designed to foster students’ success in learning, adaptive behavior, and social consciousness.
  • At all times, to hold the student’s personal integrity in the highest regard and to provide the support and encouragement necessary to promote the student’s sense of worth.
  • Ensure the individual student’s physical safety and well being through vigilance, sound management techniques, and sincere concern for each child in our care.
  • Provide students with the kind of information and experiences that will enhance their decision making and success in the areas of prevocational training.
  • Encourage and make possible, when appropriate, the student’s re-entry to regular school environment.

Program Participation

The student’s base school, through contact with the division department of special education, refers the student to Ivy Creek for possible admission to the program. Parents/guardians are contacted by a representative of the local school division after school related information is reviewed by Ivy Creek School staff to inform them of the possibility that the Ivy Creek program might be a beneficial placement for their child. The parent or guardian is invited to a meeting to participate in the development of an Individual Educational Program (IEP) and to take part in the decision making process regarding placement.

Our Mission

The mission of the staff and students at Cedar Mountain is to create a safe learning environment which meets the individual needs of students so they may achieve the skills necessary for successful transition to their base school districts and communities.

The overall operation of the school is the responsibility of the program coordinator who works under the supervision of the PREP Executive Director. The Piedmont Regional Board of Control, made up of members of the ten participating school boards, set the policies and operation budget.

Program Overview

Cedar Mountain is a public day school serving students with emotional disturbances who are currently receiving special education services with an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Placement is determined by the student’s Local Educational Agency (LEA) through the IEP committee.

Students who attend Cedar Mountain usually have encountered difficulty in less restrictive school environments and require more support in the classroom and other school settings.

Current enrollment is presently limited to twenty students working with ten staff members. On-site counseling is provided both individually and in group, depending on IEP requirements.

Students are placed in either primary or secondary classes, dependent on their educational (IEP) and social needs. Each class consists of one teacher and two paraprofessionals that provide educational services to students assigned. Students are expected to work at the appropriate grade level.

Counseling

Counseling services are provided by a licensed professional counselor, experienced in assisting students with emotional disturbances. Objectives are based on IEP goals, learning appropriate social skills, effective coping strategies and developing a positive and constructive attitude toward the educational experience. Counseling is provided in individual, group and family formats.

Research shows that involvement of parents/guardians in their children’s education is paramount to success.
